Farm in the Palace
The dream of returning to his roots and working on the land led Marcin to Piszkowice, where he discovered a Baroque pearl - a palace that was once the heart of a vast 350-hectare estate. The mill, distillery, sheepfold, picturesque ponds, extensive forests and fertile fields - these are just fragments of this historic complex. After 1945, the estate was taken over by the State Agricultural Farm which, despite the challenges, managed it efficiently.
Unfortunately, after 1989 there was a period of gradual deterioration, interrupted only in 2015, when the new owner made an effort to renovate and reunite the various elements of this unique establishment. Today, the Palace is the heart of a farm of several hectares and the building itself is home to a high-standard Agrotourism business.
A story perfect for film scripts
Piszkowice Chateau is a place with a unique history, combining the histories of Bohemia Austria Prussia Germany and since 1945 Poland in colourful documents, archival records and anecdotes. Film scripts are written here: the Hussite invasion in 1427 and the burning down of the chateau. This was followed by religious disputes, banishment and the recovery of the estate by the powerful Haugwitz family. 1743 was the time when the Haugwitz family of Moravian origin became Prussians and as a reward for their loyalty to the new ruler Frederick the Great, the latter visited them and spent the night in the palace.
Shortly afterwards, the Haugwitz family received the titles of counts. The Napoleonic wars are an extremely interesting episode and General Van Damme stayed in the palace for several weeks during the siege of the Klodzko fortress. He must have peeped every day with his telescope at the distant fortress to check whether the defending Prussian troops had already raised the white flag. One of the last owners, Wolfgang von Eichborn, made huge changes to the appearance of the building's surroundings - we will gladly tell you how the palace looked in the mid-19th century.
Our story
Piszkowice Chateau has witnessed many historical events which shaped the fate of the region. The owners of Piszkowice were important noble families, for example relatives of the Haugwitz family held ministerial portfolios at the Habsburg court and Martin Luther's wife was born von Haugwitz. However, by far the most illustrious guest at the palace was Frederick the Great himself, who spent at least one night here.
The defensive establishment at Piszkowice, comprising a former manor house and the remains of walls and towers, testifies to the importance of this place as an important knight's seat in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries it was ruled by many distinguished families, including the von Haugwitz, von Zedlitz-Neukirch, von Falkenhausen and von Eichborn.
In 1776, King Frederick the Great himself stayed here overnight, and in 1807, during the siege of Kłodzko, Napoleon's General Van Damme chose this place as his headquarters. These historic visits have left behind rich archives, which we are happy to bring you up to date, revealing the extraordinary events,
